Welcome to The Buccaneers’ Smorgasbord, where we embark on an unforgettable voyage to the golden age of piracy! As party-goers gather for this Outrageous Outdoor Eating Event, they will be transported back to the Spanish Main, the infamous waters teeming with sharks, adventure and treasure, and their top destination: Port Royal, now known as Jamaica. Known as the “Wickedest City on Earth” in the 17th century, Port Royal was a bustling pirate haven where buccaneers, privateers, and swashbucklers converged to trade their plunder and revel in the spoils of their high-seas escapades.

A Glimpse of the Era

The Spanish Main, encompassing the coastal waters of the Caribbean, was a hotspot for pirate activity during the 1600s. These daring sailors, known for their ruthless raids on Spanish galleons loaded with gold and silver, created a legacy that has fascinated generations. Port Royal stood at the heart of this era, a city filled with taverns, trading posts, and a diverse mix of adventurers seeking fortune and excitement.

The theme is easy to master and execute, making it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to host a memorable and unique gathering.

The Buccaneers’ Smorgasbord is an exhilarating sailing adventure-themed party that promises to take your summer barbecue and entertaining capabilities into the realm of the 1600’s and the Spanish Main where pirates ruled the waves. Introduction to The Era

Port Royal: A Snapshot in Time

Date and Year: June 6, 1692

On June 6, 1692, Port Royal was at the height of its infamy as a bustling pirate haven and a key trading port in the Caribbean. This was just before its catastrophic demise later that month. As one of the wealthiest and most notorious cities in the New World, Port Royal attracted adventurers, merchants, and pirates alike.

The Trading Hub of the Spanish Main

Port Royal thrived as a center of commerce and illicit trading during the 17th century. The port was renowned for its diverse and lucrative trade activities, which included:

1. Pirate Plunder: Pirates brought their stolen goods to Port Royal, including gold, silver, and precious gems looted from Spanish ships. These goods were traded or sold in the port's bustling markets.
   

2. Sugar and Rum: As a key player in the Caribbean sugar trade, Port Royal saw a significant amount of sugar and rum passing through its docks. These commodities were produced in the surrounding plantations and were in high demand in Europe and the American colonies.
   

3. Slaves: The port was also involved in the transatlantic slave trade. Enslaved Africans were brought to Port Royal to be sold and distributed across the Caribbean and the American mainland.
   

4. Spices and Exotic Goods: Traders brought spices, tobacco, coffee, and other exotic goods from across the Caribbean and beyond, making Port Royal a melting pot of different cultures and merchandise.
   

5. Provisions and Supplies: Ships preparing for long voyages stocked up on provisions and supplies, including food, water, “Simples & Worts” (herbs used for medicinal needs and wellness), spices for bolstering spoiled foodstuffs, weapons, and ammunition, making Port Royal a critical resupply point.

The Demise of Port Royal

Tragically, on June 7, 1692, the day after our chosen OOEE snapshot, Port Royal was struck by a massive earthquake followed by a tsunami. This catastrophic event caused a significant portion of the city to sink into the sea, killing thousands of residents and destroying much of its infrastructure. The earthquake marked the beginning of the end for Port Royal as a major port and pirate haven.

In the years following the disaster, efforts were made to rebuild Port Royal, but it never regained its former prominence. Subsequent fires, hurricanes, and additional earthquakes further hampered its recovery. By the 18th century, Kingston, located nearby, had emerged as the primary port and commercial center in Jamaica, overshadowing the remnants of Port Royal.

Today, Port Royal remains a quiet fishing village with a rich and storied history, drawing visitors who are fascinated by its pirate past and the dramatic events that led to its downfall. The site is also an important archaeological resource, offering insights into 17th-century life in the Caribbean.

1. Classic Pirate Captain: Channel the likes of Captain Henry Morgan with a tricorn hat, eye patch, ornate jacket, and a trusty cutlass. Add a parrot on your shoulder for a fun touch.
   

2. Swashbuckling Sailor: Opt for a more rugged look with a loose-fitting shirt, bandana, sash, and tall boots. A pair of breeches and a leather belt complete this daring outfit.
